AC4: The impossible chest? -- SOLVED
There's a chest in the seafort Conttoyor (107,551) that seems impossible to get. Not hard to find it or get to it, but hard to open it. Here's why. The front side of the chest is bordered by a stalking zone. You can't open it here, because the stalking zone forbids you from standing up. If you try to open it, Edward will kick the lock as usual, but the chest won't open and Edward will go back into a crouch. You can't open chests from the side or the rear.
I've tried holding E instead of tapping it, holding high profile so Edward stands up, holding both high profile and E, tapping both, doing random combinations of walking, tapping/holding both, cursing at my laptop; nothing works.
Did anyone have the same problem, with this or another chest? How can it be solved?
Huh. I never had that problem with a chest. might be the version you're playing, I'm on 360
That's what you get for playing the Dutch version of AC4!
If the game has winter and summer seasons like AC3, you can try going there in winter and see if the stalking zone is still there.
I collected all chests on the xbox version no problem. There were a couple near stalking zones like this too, sorry man.

Yeah, AC4 doesn't have seasons.

I'm sure the Animus certainly has a function to allow snowing in the Caribbean.

I tried it, and it didn't work. Edward stands still to let the animation happen (kicking the chest) but the chest doesn't open and Edward crouches/squats in the stalking zone.
Right now I'm hoping Ubisoft will patch this.

I just submitted this issue to the Ubisoft support team and I will update this thread if/when I receive an answer. Fingers crossed!
If an enemy sees you and is suspicious, doesn't that prevent crouching in stalking zones? You could try luring an enemy nearby if there are any and make him suspicious.

This fort has been captured, so there are no enemies present anymore. Even if there were, I don't think you can open chests while enemies are suspicious. Still, thanks for brainstorming.
I received a message from the Ubi support staff.
They thank me for reporting the issue and say that it has been sent to the right people to be processed. When it has been solved it will appear on the support section of the website.
Found a similar chest at an uncharted location at 688,904. This chest is a little different, because the stalking zone is not covering the entire front side of the chest. However, when opening it, Edward automatically stands directly in front of the chest, right in the stalking zone, meaning he can't open it because he's forced to crouch. I thought: Nooo, not another one. Luckily I managed to open this one by standing in the empty zone next to the stalking zone and holding E.
Sadly, there is no spot near the Conttoyor chest where this can be done; the entire front is covered by the stalking zone there.
Right now this chest is the only thing keeping me from 100%. It's killing me.

Got it. Here's what you do: Run through the stalking zone and mash 
as you approach the chest.
I was in a hurry and happened to do it by accident on the first try. Only then did I recognize it as gerund's impossible chest!

It didn't work, sadly. I swear that stalking zone was placed there for the sole purpose of pissing me off. Honestly, I don't know if it's been patched already. I didn't play Black Flag for a long time and missed a lot of updates, and I didn't download it just now because I wanted to try out your method as soon as possible.
Okay. I rolled back to an older savegame and made a video of looting this chest. There was no problem at all. I was able to loot it while crouching in the stalking zone. This was on Xbox 360 with all of the game updates installed.
It looks like they've already patched it or else it was never broken on Xbox.
Yeah, seems like this problem only occurs on PC. All the other players that reported this problem were PC gamers, as far as I know. I might give it another try tomorrow after I give the game some time to update. Anyway, thanks for taking time to look into it.
I'm on a PS4 and had no issues with it either, so you may be right in that it's a problem limited to the PC version of the game.

Finally downloaded the entire update (had to do it separated over a couple of days) and tried it again.
No change.
I am done with this game.
I updated my question at Ubisoft support with some passive-agressiveness.
Next step will be active agressiveness 
I gave up.
Ubi support told me that the chest can be opened by going closer to the chest. Like I hadn't tried that already.
I told them I tried it multiple times without success and desperately asked them what I was doing wrong and what I could do to solve the problem.
In their reply to that they said that they 'played the scenario and had no problems with opening the chest'. They then told me again to go closer to the chest.
I will never get the skeleton crew, which I think was the coolest unlockable cheat.

If you are reading this, whoever you are, and you have struggled with this same problem too but found a way to solve it: don't hesitate to post it. You'll make me very happy.
On a more jolly note, I solved the latest AC Initiates clue without looking up the answer, so that's got me pretty satisfied.

OK try this. It worked for me. Had the same problem and it out me off for a while. On PC just go in front of the chest at conttoyor until you see the button. Hold down e and then whilst still holding it down press alt+tab. Don't know how but it did work. Hope it helps

Cutscenes, menus, alles. Stemmen gelukkig niet, alleen de ondertiteling. Dat zou echt een ramp zijn. Ik denk wel dat ik komende AC's gewoon in het Engels speel. Ik had het hier gedaan omdat ik dacht dat ik anders die piratengibberish niet zou kunnen begrijpen.

I'd still like to thank hellrazor for joining the site just to provide an answer to this question. If his solution works, it's superior to the previous workaround which involved an Alt-Tab (Windows keyboard shortcut to switch applications). This suggestion uses only in-game controls.

I'm honestly not sure if I've tried this method. I've tried so many silly stuff though, I can hardly imagine NOT having tried this. Still, it's good there's helpful people like hellrazor around, indeed.
So... I ran into this issue personally on my PC version of this game, and decided to look for a fix, and obviously it led me here, and I find it utterly hilarious that the fix was simply holding E down and Alt+Tabbing out of the game, lol. Nice one, and thanks a lot.
There's an alternate method proposed by hellrazor in the comments above. Are you able to confirm that this also works?

I came to this game late, as I recently upgraded my PC and am working through a backlog of recent games. I'm not sure I like the aggressive tone of the more 'senior' members of this forum- do please go out and get some sun, lads, otherwise once you're old enough to get a gun licence I'm sure I'll soon be reading about you in the newspapers.
But thanks, Gerund for posting the question and elliotto1 for solving it. Worked fine for me, on both chests- I was beginning to get frustrated with the chest that Gerund solved, so used the 'E-Alt-Tab' on both. Now 100% on chests and very much looking to the skeleton crew- though of course that'll mean I've completed this wonderful game.

Most of my experiences on this site have been very positive, and that's why I enjoy spending my time here.
We like to delve deeply into analysis of certain topics regarding the games, how they work, what their gameplay is like and what we'd like to see out of them in the future, but aside from that TheHiddenBlade has, thus far, been one of the kindest and most welcoming communities I've been a part of! The senior members in particular like to keep it that way for newcomers too, so I'm not really understanding where this perception is coming from.
A good thing to note is that, if ever there are sharp words or tone of speech, it's super rarely (if ever) directed at each other; most often it's pointed at the direction the series has taken -- which is something not just TheHiddenBlade but the AC community at large is unhappy with.
Sorry for the comment, it's just curious to me what led to this idea, and in a tone much more accusatory than the kind I generally see here, too.
All that aside, don't hesitate to jump in and have a good time here. We don't bite and we're not gonna crucify you or anything crazy like that.
