I heard someone say "There are two sides to every story" and it reminded me of a classic incident here on The Hidden Blade. The year was 2011 and I was on vacation in California and Nevada when all of the following happened.
JoeyFogey had found a PVR he was considering to record gameplay. It started here: https://www.thehiddenblade.com/possible-recording-device
About three hours later a new member named "outOfTym3" recommended it. Then IanXO4 pointed out that the maker claimed the PVR was HD but it actually wasn't. There was some back and forth between outOfTym and Ian, who was acting site administrator in my absence. Then came the shocking moment when Ian announced:
this isnt a real debate... outoftym3 joined THB only to leave good comments on the product. thats right... OUTOFTYM3 IS NEUTRONX. this only supports my assertion that this company should not be trusted.
Ian never revealed publicly how he figured out the connection but I think it's safe to do so now. OutOfTym had used the curiously worded phrase "there is always two sides to a story". Ian did a web search of that exact phrase and there were only a few hits, one of which was on Neutronx's web site (not in a visitor comment but rather on a page that only an employee would be able to edit). The other hits were comments supporting Neutronx made on various forums around the web. Clearly, all of them were written by the same person.
[note: Above I have changed the name of the company in case they still have Google Alerts and a rapid response campaign.]
I had always assumed Ian did some crazy stuff with finding the user's IP address.
