This takes place during the Royal Misfortune memory in sequence 12 memory 2.

Pre-boarding

The developers didn't want you to reach the ship when Bartholomew Roberts escapes, so they added some safeguards.
1. Bartholomew and some nearby guards disappear at certain points including near the ship.
2. After Bartholomew escapes onto the ship invisible barriers appear to prevent you from jumping onto the ship.
3. When Bartholomew runs to the ship the guards come after you. One shoots at you and another tackles you.

However by going around the area and running from the side you can get to the ship fast enough before the barrier appears as well as not having to worry about the guards stopping you.

As for being on board, it's a little disappointing. Roberts can't be killed, and there's a time limit for taking the wheel of the Jackdaw. However there is an alternative way to do this.

Alternative Boarding

Normally when the timer reaches zero you fail. However if you happen to be synching a viewpoint when that happens it isn't game over. Somehow you trick the game (I've tried using this trick in other missions where there is a timer and it doesn't work for them). Now you can board the Royal Fortune and kill everyone on board (except for the target who is invincible), but you cannot progress through the game since the Jackdaw has been sunk and continues to sink.

Although the viewpoint synching trick prevents you from dying it has it's disadvantages, which are falling from any height onto a standing surface causes Edward to collapse as though you desynched, although it isn't game over; and taking any damage desynches you.

Nice video!

Your creativity with AC games never ceases to amaze me.

once the Jackdaw is sunk... does it respawn back at the beginning of the level where you left it? or maybe it never unspawns and left a copy of itself so you can progress through the mission? and I assume you tried to push him off there at the end...

Didn't check to see if it was still at the beginning of the mission, but even if it was you still might not be able to take the wheel (Captain Kid already is). And no, you can't move him at all, although there are still a few things left to investigate...

Hey have you ever tried reloading last check point after the JackDaw is sinked?

Yes, and the last checkpoint is when Bartholomew runs to the ship (like at 3:49).

Finally found a good use for the pre-boarding. If you kill the captain at the helm and get to the Jackdaw (quickly too, because you hardly have any time to spare) the ship can be boarded after one hit. Not right away though, possibly because the chase is scripted, and the ship's health bar doesn't even appear. One the Royal Fortune is joined by the other ships it's one hit away from boarding. Very useful in a speedrun.

Another thing. Starting from the checkpoint when you can board the ship, if you stealth board it, Roberts is no where to be found.

so wait...
- board it
- kill the captain
- get back to Jackdaw
all before the timer runs out?

can I get a video of that? maybe including the chase-and-board... speedrun style?

That's it in a nut shell. My preferred way of killing the captain is with an air assassinate because ranged weapons don't work so well, especially when I'm in a hurry. Takes more than one gunshot, throwing knife hit the mast on the way, and I'm not sure about beserk dart.

A video of it? *whine* Just when I thought I was done recording for now. Of course for someone who wants to see it of course I would. I just need to pump out some vids I'm already in the process of making.
