Tempted to dive in but now I am considering the past games.

Will it be worth it for an old fan to get Unity and Syndicate?

I might do it for a slight plot refresh and a taste of gameplay again to get my psyched up. But I fear it may not be worth the $$.

What do you think THB?

Watch the AC Unity and AC Syndicate Present Day cutscenes on YouTube. They have no Present Day gameplay whatsoever.
Play AC Origins.

If you enjoyed AC Origins and just feel like more Assassin's Creed for whatever reason, play Unity and Syndicate then.

Sounds like what I will do, got advice from other forums and they all seem fairly standalone so will wait for a sale.

They're worth a rental each, but Origins has still kept me playing. So just catch up on story if you're that worried about it.

Unity is riddled with glitches and other issues, while Syndicate doesn't have much to offer. Origins is the first game in a long time that really puts effort into every feature the game has to offer. But be warned, enemy routes are randomized, so don't expect to be able to set up assassinations like in previous games.
