@FLAE: A small group of friends hang out at work and are hilarious with their ridiculous dialogue, mostly unscripted. They find themselves in wacky situations almost everyday. Same basic idea with their own twists. Not a clone entirely, but very similar. Still, they're both excellent.

@ROB: I was just kidding with ya! No harm done. It's understandable.

@Phi: Well I don't care much about any of that stuff either over here, but even I can get defensive of this country...

Just because we use a seperate measurement system than the rest of the world doesn't make it stupid. It works just as well and isn't confusing if you were raised on it. It's extremely easy for me to understand. Just like metric with you and your peers.

And yes, Americans are pretty dumb, and Jersey Shore is one of the many shows that doesn't help our image. But that isn't our country. Do you think I judge Afghanistan, Iraq or Iran of being exclusively terrorist countries because a tiny perentage of them are affiliated with terrorists? Lots of THB members are at least from here or live here for a good reason.
Labelling all of us as "stupid" is a bad idea, especially since an American on here is able to ban you for any reason. One user is gone just for talking about another user spelled things incorrectly. Imagine what would happen if you disrespected an entire country in one post.

And every country hated how Bush influenced the world in 8 years (since he was the leader for most of our generation, we blame him, of course!), but that's because you and everyone seem to depend on one of the youngest countries in the world (only a couple hundred years old) to be dominant in economy, foreign affairs and other political happenings. Maybe YOU'RE the stupid ones who need to grow up and do things yourself instead of whining to a toddler of a country like we are.

Let me point some things out of why we're still great even though you think we are not:

Did your country defeat the top military power in order to gain independance? Be reminded that this was fighting with regular citizens, farmers, etc. No, you didn't.

One of our people gave the world the ability to truly harness electricity.

Did you help turn the tide in WW2? No. We saved your asses.

We're actually very generous. After WW2, we developed the Marshall Plan, designed to aid Europe after the devestating effects of the war. We saved even more asses that way.

Osama wasn't just a threat to us, but a threat to the world. Did your troops end his evil reign? No.
without him, Al Queda suffered a huge blow in leadership. It won't be the same in their group.

So before you judge our still growing country on our ways, think about what we've accomplished in our short time here.

Sorry if my vocabulary is too "stupid" for you, your smartness. Just know that you'll always be a few MILES behind me in awesomeness. Wink

I'm pretty sure I just won, actually. For someone who'd fall into the crowd of saying the USA is full of arrogant, self-centered people, you're more American than me. Therefore, you've become what you hate. "I am, in fact, awesome" will forever label you as one. Thank you for losing! ^_^

coupled with this

Sorry if my vocabulary is too "stupid" for you, your smartness. Just know that you'll always be a few MILES behind me in awesomeness. Wink

do you see the problem here?

ok, to the actual points.

everyone seem to depend on one of the youngest countries in the world (only a couple hundred years old) to be dominant in economy.

now i can only speak for my country but considering the economy i wouldn't say dependant seeing as americas economy is appaerntly in the crapper, and swedens was one of the contrys least affected by the economydrop last year

Did your country defeat the top military power in order to gain independance? Be reminded that this was fighting with regular citizens, farmers, etc. No, you didn't.

We're actually very generous. After WW2, we developed the Marshall Plan, designed to aid Europe after the devestating effects of the war. We saved even more asses that way.

i don't know enough about these two to disagree, so good for you

Did you help turn the tide in WW2? No. We saved your asses.

i'd give that more to the russians actually

Osama wasn't just a threat to us, but a threat to the world. Did your troops end his evil reign? No.
without him, Al Queda suffered a huge blow in leadership. It won't be the same in their group.

when Al Queda has stopped all activity, then you can brag. but as it is now, that group is not one where you can cut off the head and the body dies.
from what i understand it's more like, cut off the head and it grows a few more, and maybe some legs.

i'm not saying the "war" on terrosrist doesn't need to be fought, just don't go putting up "mission accomplished" signs.

and i just wanna put this little picture up here
it's too big so just a link this time.
please ignore the blatant namecalling in it, it was just the first thing i could find to make the point

I'll say this, America tries to take way too much credit for WWII, at least in Europe. Rob's right. If the Russians hadn't pressed the Germans back, then Germany probably would have been able to resist. Also, if Britain hadn't taken a final stand against the Nazis in London, there wouldn't have even been a D-Day. WWII would have been won by the Axis. Where the United States should take credit for is the Pacific Campaign. Taking down Japan through Island Hopping was absolutely unbelievable.

That said, if you're going to have this argument, please have it elsewhere.
But lets all agree the French are laughably awful when it comes to armed conflict.

Actually, I was going to agree with ROB's statement and FLAE's comment, but after trying twice to set up the quotes, backspace unnecessary sentences and attempt to post, everything was deleted. That's what I get for typing it all out on my phone for 10 mins. I'll actually post it later from my laptop. So frustrating.

But FLAE summarized most of that part of it for me, so I can leave that out. Haha

I did explain the Marshall Plan and everything in that quote, but I don't think people care.

And did anyone else notice that this all started after I proposed a mini forum game and someone thought it was strange how I put my birthdate? I'm pretty sure I put "or vice versa" or something for users who are used to that form.

I don't really understand why it escalated so much.

I didn't mean it like that. I do not believe all American people are stupid and you ought to know that. What I meant was that I think the metric system is stupid. I was in a hurry, so I didn't really think it through.

JoeyFogey wrote:

Please, it's a joke.

I have learnt the hard way that starting a debate with someone will only fortify their beliefs, leading you to go over every nitty-gritty bit of their post, then getting your words misinterpreted and then repeat the cycle all over again. I like debate, but only when it's to form a final opinion together, not when it's the literate equivalent of a bar fight.
Let's just face it, both have their differences, and I like Europe more, but you may like America more and that's perfectly fine. I like the metric system more. You may like the imperial system more BUT THEN YOU'RE JUST STUPID.

Just kidding. Tongue So, 13 August, murder?

That's the exact reason why I've said in the past that I don't like involving myself in politics/religion/other personal beliefs with many people. 90% of the time, it ends badly.

Phi wrote:

Actually, I like Europe a hell of a lot more than America. The only reason I went on like that was because it did seem fairly insulting with the word choice about the country I've lived in my entire life. It's like if someone makes fun of your little brother. You can pick on them all you want, but if someone else does the same thing, you get defensive and stand up for them.

I may dislike a lot of current American ways, but that doesn't mean I don't love my homeland! Big smile

The program's date view is pretty logical, I think. Tongue

From what I've read, the riots in the UK are caused by youngsters feeling alienated from the government. The original 'cause' was the death of a civilian the police shot dead (I doubt they did that without a good reason), but I think that was just an excuse.

Here's the lowdown on the riots from someone who lives quite close to one of the affected cities (Birmingham):

Mark Duggan was unintentionally shot and killed by police in London after a pre-planned operation was carried out on the 4th August. Initially, it was thought he had fired first but it is now clear he didn't fire at police at all.

People started protesting (peacefully) on 6th August, wanting justice for Duggan's death, but the protest soon turned violent and people began to attack the police, set fire to vehicles/buildings and loot shops in Tottenham (an area of London).

The violence and looting spread across London the next night (7th) and police were outnumbered by people causing criminal damage and attacking them. A furniture store was burnt down and Enfield Police Station was also surrounded.

The next evening (8th) the rioting spread to other cities across England, namely Birmingham, Nottingham, Liverpool, Bristol and Manchester. More looting took place and many vehicles were set alight. Rioters once again outnumbered police officers.

By the evening of the 9th, England's football match against Holland was cancelled due to safety issues but 16,000 police were deployed across London in an effort to outnumber the rioters. London remained relatively peaceful but rioting and arson continued in Nottingham, 3 men were run over and murdered in Birmingham while defending their local community, and officers in Manchester city centre and Salford are attacked with bricks and rocks as looting and rioting worsened there too.

As of now (evening of the 10th) things seemed to have calmed down ever so slightly and the police have, to some extent, maintained control of London. About 1000 people have been arrested and the process of identifying and charging criminals has begun. Many have volunteered to help clean up the streets but some people continue to riot. My only experience of the trouble has been an increased police presence in my home-town of Solihull and almost all the shops closing early for fear of being attacked.

The riots began with a protest and have basically spread due to this country being full of absolute idiots who will join in with anything for a laugh and because they fancy a free TV or pair of trainers. Loads of morons are just jumping on the bandwagon and trying to cause trouble for trouble's sake.

Here's a timeline of events so far. Scroll down to read it from the start. There is also several videos at the top showing footage of rioting from around the country.

Damn that's crude. Are the riots consistent, and spread throughout the city, or are they reserved to specific areas of the city?

They're pretty much across whole cities. Obviously the looting is in certain shopping areas but in London, for example, rioting is in rougher areas like Croydon and Brixton, but has also spread to popular tourist areas with posh restaurants like Notting Hill. In other cities it's the same. Manchester city centre has been attacked but so has Salford, an area outside the centre.

After the triple murder in Birmingham though, the riots seemed to have ceased. One of the victim's fathers spoke out and appealed for calm and it would appear people have listened.

And believe me, I have no issue with you calling these rioters idiots or using that against England - it's absolutely pathetic and I still can't believe how out of hand it has become. People are obviously blaming it on today's youth culture but there are plenty of adults involved too! Admittedly, it is mostly young delinquents, often labelled 'chavs', who have less brain cells between them than an ant. The riots in other cities have been called copycat riots an that's exactly what they are. The events in London have inspired these people to be even more idiotic than usual. Politicians keep appearing on the TV talking about finding the root of the problem (poverty, education, discipline etc.) but I think all that is absolute crap. These people have enough to survive but are just greedy and stupid. Perhaps some of them don't see that what they're doing is wrong but I find that hard to believe. Stuff like this really makes me angry.

I know a girl that got offered the role of a prostitute in this movie and she turned it down looking for better work. That was over a year ago and she hasn't received any offers since.

Moral of this story is if you're desperate to break into Hollywood, no matter how embarrassing the role is, you take it. Especially if its in a Harold & Kumar movie that EVERYONE sees. NPH got the lead role on How I Met Your Mother thanks to "H&K Go to White Castle." It at least gets your name out there.

Also, in other FLAE film connection news, my cousin's home in the northern suburbs of Chicago is the home of Matt Damon in the new film "Contagion." And in an even WEIRDER story, I know one of the 15 year olds that was just in 30 Minutes or Less.

When am I gonna get my time to shine?
